Essential Functions and Objectives:
The Communications Specialist will lead the editorial planning and content for all-employee communications, including gathering content, writing, editing and execution; collaborate with DPS departments to create strategic communications campaigns; provide writing and editing support; and assist with other roles and needs with the DPS Communications Team.
- Lead the daily editorial planning for all-employee communications, including newsletters, the intranet and other employee-facing communications.
- Manage the weekly production of two employee-facing newsletters, including content gathering, writing, editing and publication.
- Plan and support with posting daily content to the employee intranet; manage the daily homepage content.
- Support Human Resources and other departments to create and execute communications plans for internal initiatives, including open enrollment, growth and performance, operational efficiency and other requests.
- Write, format, edit and proofread a variety of communications, including information for newsletters, executive communications, website content, print content, promotional materials, messaging and more.
- Manage distribution lists, inboxes and submissions related to DPS news and communications.
- Consult departments on communications best-practices and how to best share information.
- When requested, support with internal crisis management communications.
- Assist with other special events and projects as they arise.
- Other projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Experience & Other Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of progressive experience in the communications field, marketing, media relations and/or internal communications preferably with experience in education or a public agency.
- Exceptional oral, writing, proofreading and editing skills, as well as experience with tailoring messaging to a variety of audiences.
- Can create high-quality content quickly and under tight deadlines.
- Ability to create and execute strategic and detailed communications plans.
- Ability to foster collaborative working relationships at all levels in the organization.
- Project-management skills, with ability to prioritize multiple projects and work independently once given direction.
- Detail-oriented.
- Team player with a collaborative attitude.
- Knowledge of AP Style.
- Knowledge of Constant Contact or other email marketing platforms.
- Fluency in all Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Adobe - Creative Suite knowledge preferred.
- Knowledge of Schoolwires and WordPress a plus.
- Photography and other multi-media skills a plus.
- Must have access to transportation to ensure event coverage.
- Work during evenings and weekends may be required as mandated by projects or events.
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field.
