Textile Instillation Assistant - Part Time

Job Description

Assist with installation and deinstallation of Dior: From Paris to the World exhibition, including unpacking/packing couture garments and accessories; dressing mannequins; creating underdressing and touching up final looks.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Art handling of delicate couture garments and accessories.
  • Assist with unpacking and repacking of garments
  • Assist Dior team with preparation of under dressing materials; dressing and final touch up.
  • Exhibit knowledge and expertise with envisioning and executing mannequin silhouettes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively and constructively within a team framework
  • Knowledge of appropriate handling of couture garments
  • Understanding of fashion and/or costume design and the construction of garments
  • Knowledge of the materials and equipment required to execute the dressing and installation of mannequins
  • Good reasoning and problem solving ability
  • Demonstrate high level of discretion at all times
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

  • Proficient in all sewing and hand stitching techniques
  • Knowledge and understanding of ideal fit and silhouette for a range of garment types
  • Knowledge of underdressing; how to build up a dress form for long-term display of a garment
  • Extremely high attention to detail
  • Ability to work as a team member and with limited supervision
  • Ability to work well under pressure and time constraints

Education or Formal Training

  • Degree in art, fashion, design, studio arts, museum studies, or other related field preferred.

Experience

  • Experience as a seamstress, tailor, or production assistant helping with wardrobe, costumes etc. (or a similar role)
  • Experience handling haute couture or theatrical costume; dressing mannequins
  • Prior fashion or textile art museum exhibition mounting experience preferred, but not required

 

Material and Equipment Directly Used

  • Sewing machine and hand sewing materials
  • Hand and power tools
  • Art moving equipment including A-frame, carts, rolling racks, furniture dolly, pallet jack
  • Camera (35M, Polaroid, digital, ipad)
  • Handheld and freestanding supplemental lighting

Working Environment/Physical Activities

  • Museum, gallery, storage locations
  • Temperature changes
  • Exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment
  • Subject to many interruptions
  • Lifting, pushing or pulling more than 50 pounds
  • Standing, walking, sitting, and climbing
  • Eye/hand/foot coordination
